What technically happens when you click cashback?
Briefly explains how the click path from the portal to the credit works.
Transparency: Where does the money come from?
Cashback is not “free money”, but rather a marketing commission passed on. The process:
Link click → purchase → portal receives commission → cashback payout to you.
- 1Click in the portal
Click on “Go to Shop”. A tracking link with parameters/cookie is set.
- 2Shop recognizes partners
When you check out, the shop knows which portal you came from.
- 3Commission flows
After a valid purchase, the shop pays the portal a commission.
- 4Cashback credit
The portal will credit you with a portion as cashback (“open” status).
- 5Confirmation & Payout
After the return period, the status changes to “confirmed” → Payout.
Why purchases are sometimes not tracked
Ad blocker / tracking blocker
Block scripts or cookies. Solution: Whitelist for portal and shop.
Incorrect click path
Between the click and the purchase, price comparison sites or vouchers were used, which override the tracking.
Store in-app purchases
Some shop apps do not open a trackable path. Buy via browser unless the portal recommends otherwise.
Cookies/JavaScript disabled
Without a cookie, the shop cannot recognize the partner; Without JS, tracking pixels are often missing.
Payment methods or cancellations
Certain payment methods or returns may result in loss. Read the terms and conditions for each shop.
Timeout
If you purchase hours after clicking, the cookie may expire. It's better to order directly.
You can find further examples and portal specifics in the detailed articles: Shop tracking, iGraal tracking, TopCashback tracking, ShopMate tracking.
Tracking checklist: How to reduce the risk of losing cashback
- Own “cashback browser” or profile without ad blocker for shop & portal.
- Shopping cart empty before you click on “Go to shop”.
- Do not open any further tabs/price comparisons after clicking.
- Complete the purchase promptly, save the receipt.
- Check status in portal; If tracking is missing, contact support with receipts.
This checklist addresses the long-tail topic of “solving cashback tracking problems.” More on this in Strategy article and in FAQ.
Affiliate programs and commissions
Cashback portals depend on partner programs from shops. These determine when a commission is paid. Common conditions: No cancellation, no refunded payment, partial exclusions for certain categories. Portals pass on this information in abbreviated form. Read the shop details in the portal before ordering.
In the Comparison you can see how transparently the providers deal with it. In the detail pages Shoop, iGraal, TopCashback and ShopMate you will find typical information.
Understanding Payouts
Cashback is usually only credited after confirmation by the shop. This can last from a few days to several weeks. Payout options are often bank or PayPal, sometimes vouchers. Check in advance whether there are any fees or minimum amounts. We don't give any specific numbers here, as they vary depending on the campaign.
Tips for a smooth process:
- Use clear email notifications so you don't miss confirmations.
- Allow for waiting time, especially when traveling or making higher-priced purchases.
- Use the portal's export/overview function to track amounts.
Cookies, consent & data protection
Many portals require your consent for cookies so that the click can be attributed. If you block cookies or delete them immediately after the click, the shop cannot allocate the commission. Modern portals sometimes use server-side parameters, but these also usually require JavaScript and permitted requests.
Best practices
Accept cookie banners on the portal and shop if you want cashback. Use a separate browser profile if you want to separate tracking and everyday life.
Data protection notice
Reputable portals document what data they send. Read the privacy policy, especially if you use international providers like TopCashback uses.
Example purchase flow (desktop)
- Open browser profile without blocker, only for cashback if necessary.
- Select portal (Shoop, iGraal, TopCashback, ShopMate), search for a shop, click on “Go to shop”.
- Fill your shopping cart, don't open any other tabs, order directly.
- Save receipt, check status in portal. If it is “open”, wait and contact support if there is no entry.
It works similarly on mobile, but avoid switching to shop apps if the portal doesn't describe an app flow. Otherwise the tracking can stop.
Typical sources of error in detail
Cross-device purchases
Activation on the smartphone, purchase on the desktop – that destroys the path. Stay on one device per purchase.
Incognito mode
Cookies are deleted as soon as you close. It's better to use your own profile instead of incognito.
External vouchers
Vouchers from other sources may override affiliate cookies. Only use approved codes.
Ad blocker/script blocker
You can block tracking pixels. Use whitelist for portal and shop or second profile.
Late purchases
If you purchase hours after clicking, the cookie may expire. Order directly.
Payment switches
Some payment methods open external windows that lose cookies. Check whether your portal has any information about this.
Backup plan: If cashback is missing
Even with the best preparation, a purchase can still go wrong. Then a systematic approach counts:
- Provide receipt, timestamp, shop name.
- Contact support in the portal (FAQ: Cashback is missing).
- Attach a short explanation that you clicked via the portal.
- Plan for patience – shops check cases manually.
Documentation is your best friend. Screenshots or PDFs help support understand the click.
Why portals set conditions
Portals have specifications as to which vouchers are allowed and which categories are excluded. Reason: Shops only pay for brokered sales that have not already been discounted through other promotions. These rules are listed in your portal's shop profile. Read them before making big purchases to avoid disappointment.
If you are unsure, compare the clues between Shoop, iGraal and TopCashback. Differences show how strictly a shop operates per portal.
Security & serious use
Use portals with transparent data protection information. Only install extensions from official stores. Don't enter sensitive information in dubious pop-ups. Cashback is intended to save money, not increase risks. A separate browser for cashback separates work/private life from shopping and increases security.
Short reminder for everyday life
- Open cashback browser.
- Select portal, click shop.
- No detours, buy directly.
- Save receipt, check status.
- Pay out regularly.
These five points can be gone through in 30 seconds and drastically reduce the risk of incorrect bookings.
Mobile vs. desktop – which device when?
mobile
Practical for spontaneous purchases. Use the portal’s app or mobile browser. Stay in the same tab, avoid switching to the shop app unless explicitly recommended.
Desktop
Ideal for larger purchases or trips because you have a better overview of tabs and details. Extensions remind you when you visit a partner shop.
Decide for each purchase: Spontaneous = mobile, planned = desktop. What is important is consistency per purchase so that the click path does not break.
From click to payout
Large purchase (laptop) with a focus on clean technical processes.
